Rolling out our first ever release from Mexico!!! Super excited about this origin and grateful for the Osito team for getting this coffee into my hands. San Pedro Ocopetatillo #2 is one of the most dynamic and complex offerings I've tasted in the world of Mexican specialty coffees.
In Osito's words: The Sierra Mazateca is part of the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca mountain range, in the far north of the state of Oaxaca. Located within the Sierra Mazateca, are various small, neighboring coffee-growing municipalities where Osito is proud to work with many indigenous coffee producers to create what we call “ community micro-lots.”
This lot i s from the municipality of San Pedro de Ocopetatillo, where 85% of the less than 1,000-person population speaks the Mazatec language and where the average lot size i s 66kg. 25 farmers contributed their coffee to this washed lot, and it is made up of the Typica, Mondo Nuvo, Caturra, and Bourbon varieties which were grown at 1,600 MASL.
What do we get in the cup?! A super session-able and mass appealing profile that is balanced yet nuanced and dynamic. The typica variety stands out to me in the cup profile creating a subtle florality and 'pop' in the brightness department. I get some bing cherry sweetness and vanilla all day. The sugar browning characteristics of this coffee are brown buttery and caramels which lay the foundation of this banger. As the cup cools, florals and citrus medley vibes rise with a crisp and pleasantly drying finish.
Oaxaca has some incredible coffees and they have a difficult and long journey to export. Hyped to have one in the Enjoy fold and look forward to more in the future.
